About The Alma Singers
Alma Tebbut
The choir was founded by Alma Tebbutt in February 2010. Alma decided that she would like to start a village choir after having heard another singing group performing Christmas music in the Methodist Chapel in December 2009. She had the insight and imagination to start a group in Great Barford, firmly believing there was hidden musical talent in the village. |
She put a notice in The Bridge magazine which asked anyone who was interested to attend a meeting at the Methodist Church. Alma persuaded a local school teacher, Adrian Bessant, to rehearse the choir and Tessa Wood played the piano. And so the group started with 9 members, a pianist and a conductor. Adrian Bessant, with Alma making the tea! In the beginning we did not even have a name. We were just went to 'the singing group'. Alma saw herself as a matriarchal figure or ‘Mum’ as she put it and wanted the group to be for anyone in Great Barford and surrounding villages who enjoyed singing to sing and meet in harmony. She also sang with the altos until her health deteriorated. As soon as she was well enough, she came back to concerts and rehearsals and was rightly proud of ‘her choir’. Unfortunately, her illness returned and Alma died on 20th November 2012. The small group of hopefuls that gathered that evening has grown into an enthusiastic three/four section choir and its success is a testament to Alma’s vision. |
The choir and it's repertoire have changed and developed considerably under the influence of five conductors/musical directors each of whom has had their own musical preferences.
The Alma Singers have taken part in many concerts, charity events and carol services in the local area and beyond. Detailed information on what we have recently performed and what has gone before can be accessed through the list of links on the Previous Concerts page. These are also available from the drop down menu - just hover over the previous concerts tab and use the drop down menu to select the concert or event required. Many of our concerts/events have video footage of some of the songs that we have performed. |
